For this project in Yorkshire, our clients asked us to help them finalise their self-built garden room on a small budget. They had finished the build a while ago and were struggling to pin down the best interior layout and style for that space. When we visited them, it became clear that they were probably asking too much of a single space so we focussed on prioritising their objectives and intended use before working on the decor.
Through suggesting a series of concept layouts, we showed them how we could potentially split the space into three different zones, each being able to respond to a specific need. In the end we settled on a sleeping area, a relaxing area and an office area with an additional small en-suite. When designing the interior of their space, we took inspiration from Scandinavian summer homes, which are always welcoming, communicate with their direct natural environment and have unassumed character. This design ethos responded perfectly to this family from Yorkshire.
We decided to dress the floor in concrete-looking vinyl and cover large parts of the ceiling and walls in birch plywood. This instantly created a natural and organic space. We then showed 3D renderings of their garden room to show how we could layer up the interior through building bespoke desks, shelves and a large sofa bed. We then added contrast with upholstery in green hues, industrial-type lighting and modernist artworks.
